Reconnecting with the Craft: Embracing Old-School Values in a Digital World

Remember a time when interactions felt more personal—a phone call, a handwritten letter, a hug in person. Think back to the days of going to the salon with your mom or aunt, where the moment they walked in, everyone knew their name, and they’d chat for hours about life. That’s how I grew up, and I always admired the stylist who could build genuine connections with her clients while running a fully booked business, without feeling the need to be “extra” or take on additional roles.

For me, social media has blurred the lines—it’s a vision of who people think I am, rather than who I truly am. It’s taken away the respect for the craft, turning me into a robot who seems available 24/7 just because my post was seen at 6 a.m. Do you remember hours of operation? I miss that.

I’m craving new boundaries that allow me to recharge, reconnect with myself, and live a balanced life, rather than feeling on-call every moment. I’ve loved hair since I was 14, but now I’m testing an old-school approach to my business. No more Instagram—yes, I’m stepping away from that. I’m bringing back business cards and talking to women wherever I go. I’m reviving in-person consultations and pre-booking your next appointment when you’re here.

I never want to be so busy that I lose sight of who’s sitting in my chair. I appreciate your understanding and respect as I create these new boundaries. I’m also working on an online gallery to showcase my work. I’m still the same stylist—still learning and growing—but I’m choosing to do it in a quieter, more intentional way, with a focus on doing things that align with my values. You’ll know my work by the fruits of my labor.

xoxo,

Kaye Dash
